The Seahorse Statue (Caballito de Mar)

The Seahorse Statue is one of the main symbols of Puerto Vallarta and also it is one the most famous sculptures on the large open air art gallery along the Malecon. This astonishing statue was created by Rafael Zamarripa Castañeda depicting a waving boy riding a giant seahorse wearing a cowboy hat. It is the first sculpture to appear on the Malecon in 1976, which was then installed by the old Lighthouse. It is quite interesting the interpretation of its elements: The Seahorse represents the sea, the boy is hope for the future, and the hat allures the traditions, culture plus history of Mexico. Originally this extraordinary Seahorse statue was placed at the end of Los Muertos Beach in 1960, created by the same artist; through the years it was knocking down by winds and the waves so Rafael Zamarripa produced a replica. You can visit this 3 meter high bronze Seahorse statue on the Malecon, the traditional icon representing one of the world’s friendliest cities now placed in a new location, just few steps from Los Arcos & the City Hall, with better space and stairs to sit around it.
