Gringo Gulch Neighborhood
Gringo Gulch is a picturesque residential neighborhood in downtown Puerto Vallarta, which became a landmark of this city thanks to the love story of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton which helped promote Puerto Vallarta as one of the most romantic places in the world.
Gringo Gulch is situated on the hillside just above the Guadalupe Church downtown. Throughout the decade of the 1950’s the region on the hill also located at the north of the River Cuale was developed as an expatriate neighborhood, actually it was named after the foreigners, referred to as “gringos”, who settled in the neighborhood. One of the first important newcomers to development this unique area, was Fernando “Freddy” Romero. He wanted a more typical Mexican “pueblo” style and atmosphere, something that later would become known as the “Vallarta Style” which included red-tile roofs, white-washed adobe facades, wrought iron decorations and stone walls. Another important personality includes Guillermo Wulff, who left a profound mark in Puerto Vallarta as he introduced the cupola as an architectural element in most of the homes he built.
In 1963 Richard Burton came to star in the movie “The Night of the Iguana” directed by John Huston. Puerto Vallarta was not well supplied at the time with adequate hotels so when Liz Taylor arrived with Burton, John Houston took them to his own rented villa on the hill in Gringo Gulch, Casa Kimberley. Liz and Richard fall in love with the place. Burton bought the house, a nine- bedroom villa and gave it to Elizabeth as a birthday gift in February 1964, a few months after finishing the movie and a month before they officially married. Come to explore this lovely area walking the cobbled streets, appreciate the architecture and its unique environment. Take the stairs to the famous viewpoint found on the street Matamoros to capture one of the most exciting panoramic views of Puerto Vallarta. You can have a look inside of Casa Kimberly (now a hotel with luxurious renovations) visiting the new restaurant “The Iguana” with outstanding Mexican cuisine. Great condos and villas are available in Gringo Gulch where you could enjoy living in authentic Mexico with all the modern amenities. Visit our website: www.pvparadiserentals.com
